XLab Summer Research Fellowship
The University of Chicago Existential Risk Laboratory (XLab) runs a 10-week, in-person summer research fellowship on the UChicago campus covering AI safety and security, nuclear security and their intersection. The 2026 program ran June 15 to August 22, with fellows scoping their own research questions and writing a significant product under a mentor. Fellows received a $10,000 stipend paid in two installments, UChicago dorm housing, a full dining hall meal plan and lunch funds, and technical fellows also got $4,000 in compute and API credits. Applicants needed US work authorization and a demonstrated commitment to AI safety, security or governance, or nuclear security; no visa sponsorship is offered. The 2026 deadline was March 15, and neither the fellowship page nor the XLab home page announces a 2027 call or dates.
