SDF Academic Research Grants
The Stellar Development Foundation funds academic research in science, technology, economics and law that advances financial inclusion, fast and inexpensive cross-border payments, efficient decentralized markets and other beneficial blockchain applications, in areas such as privacy-preserving payments, formal verification, Byzantine fault tolerant networks, DeFi market mechanisms, scalability and governance. Awards are unrestricted gifts paid only to degree-granting academic institutions, never to individuals, supporting a principal investigator with one graduate student or post-doc for 12 months plus expenses; budgets run up to $150,000 with a historical average of about $75,000, and students, consultants and for-profit businesses are ineligible. Proposals of three pages or fewer are submitted through an Airtable form, with up to two submissions per calendar year. Proposals are reviewed quarterly with deadlines on March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31.
