Sovereign Tech Challenge
The Sovereign Tech Agency, funded by the German federal government and hosted by SPRIND, runs the Sovereign Tech Challenge as a competition format for finding problems in the open source ecosystem and funding new solutions to them. Its only call so far, the Contribute Back Challenges, named three challenges (improve FOSS developer tooling, secure FOSS software production, and FOSS infrastructure documentation) and funded teams for up to eight months in two four-month rounds, with €65,000 to €300,000 per round excluding VAT, open to individuals and teams of any legal form inside or outside the EU with one contractor of record. Applications ran from June 6 to July 6, 2023 at 23:59 UTC+2 through the STA application system; round one started no earlier than September 2023, round two in January 2024, and the challenges ended in April 2024, with participants listed on the site. No new call has been posted since, and the page still carries a stale applications-are-open line next to the 2023 deadline notice.
