ChatGPT for Academic Researchers
ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, announced by OpenAI on 29 July 2026, gives researchers at selected academic institutions free access to its frontier models across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, with training and research support. The plan is to reach 100,000 researchers through 2027, starting with 10,000 in summer 2026; approved researchers can invite up to four collaborators from their institution. Eligible institutions are recognized, degree-granting colleges or universities with a high level of research activity, and applicants verify their affiliation and describe their research use. An update dated 10 August 2026 says new applicants join a waitlist while more than 13,000 first-wave applications are reviewed and the first 10,000-seat cohort is chosen by lottery, with applications reopening later this fall and no date given.
