Challenge Programme

The Novo Nordisk Foundation's Challenge Programme funds ambitious interdisciplinary research projects within themes selected each year, with new calls in open competition every year. The 2027 round offers up to DKK 600 million (EUR 80 million) in grants of up to DKK 75 million over up to six years across four themes: next-generation AMR diagnostics for lower respiratory tract infections, heat and hypertension, electron transfer in hybrid bio-electrocatalysis, and Earth-abundant materials. Applications go through the foundation's NORMA system in two stages, an expression of interest followed by an invited full proposal. The call page for the AMR diagnostics theme shows Stage 1 closing on October 7, 2026 at 2:00pm Copenhagen time, results in December 2026 for Stage 1 and June 2027 for Stage 2, a main applicant at a European (EU, Schengen or UK) institution and at least one applicant in Denmark. The 2026 round awarded up to DKK 600 million across nine grants, announced July 10, 2026, after the programme was opened to European main applicants. The 2025 round awarded up to DKK 478.5 million across four themes including the NNF Grand AI Challenge.
