GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge)
GENIAC is a project of Japan's METI and NEDO, running since February 2024, that supports domestic development of generative AI foundation models. Under NEDO's Post-5G Information and Communication System Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Program, NEDO subsidizes computing resource fees, including GPU and non-GPU resources arranged with a computing resource provider. Companies, organizations and universities apply through NEDO's Jgrants electronic system during each public call. The 2026 call for domain-specialized generative AI foundation models ran from January 27 to March 19, 2026; NEDO reviewed 50 applications and METI and NEDO announced 16 selected projects on June 4, 2026 (Cycle 4), with projects running in principle six months from FY2026. A separate call for robot foundation model R&D, including multipurpose robots, ran from May 18 to June 16, 2026, received 29 applications, and NEDO decided its implementing entities on September 9, 2026, with projects generally lasting one year and up to three years under specific conditions.
