NRC Research Associateship Programs
The NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP), run by the National Academies' Office of Fellowships since 1954, place postdoctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories and affiliated institutions whose sponsors include NIST, NOAA, the Naval Research Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Associates carry out self-directed research with a research adviser at the host laboratory and receive a stipend that varies by sponsoring agency and location. Postdoctoral applicants must have held a doctorate for less than five years at the deadline, and senior applicants for at least five years or hold a permanent appointment. Awards are typically for 12 months, renewable for 12 to 24 months, and senior awards can be as short as 3 months. Applications are accepted in four cycles a year with deadlines on February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1 at 5 PM ET, moved to the next business day when they fall on a weekend or federal holiday. The cycle that opened September 1, 2026 closed on November 2, 2026 and is under review from November 3, 2026; the next cycle opens December 1.
