Alfred P. Sloan Foundation — Technology Program
The Sloan Foundation's Digital Technology program funds the tools, norms, and institutions that sustain open-source software, hardware, and models in research. Its Open Source in Science line funds university Open Source Program Office (OSPO) grants (up to $750,000 over two years), publication/archiving infrastructure, and research-software career paths; prospective applicants submit a two-page letter of inquiry. Recorded sub-lines include "Better Software for Science" (13 grants) and "Exploratory Grantmaking in Technology" (8 grants).
Open Source Security Foundation
OpenSSF project that funds security work on critical open-source projects, foundations, and ecosystem services that use an OSI-approved license. Applications follow a four-quarter seasonal calendar: submissions in January, April, July, and October, then a month of co-design and a month of decision and disbursement. Recipients publish monthly reports and join monthly strategy roundtables. A March 2026 coalition investment of $12.5 million is managed with OpenSSF; Alpha-Omega reports more than 70 grants totaling over $20 million.
Amateur Radio Digital Communications
ARDC (Amateur Radio Digital Communications) funds projects that advance amateur radio, digital communications, and related technologies through an open grants application process, with awards announced annually.
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Awards AWS Promotional Credit to researchers building cloud-hosted tools, running proof-of-concept tests, or training communities on cloud research workloads. Open to full-time faculty and enrolled graduate or PhD students at accredited research institutions; applications are reviewed on a rolling 90-120 day cycle, with student awards capped at $5,000 and faculty/staff awards uncapped.
National Institutes of Health
NIH PAR-27-024 funds late-stage optimization and sustainable dissemination of research technologies and software via the RM1 mechanism. Recurring receipt dates run through 2029: 29 Sep 2026, 28 Jan 2027, 28 May 2027, 28 Jan 2028, 26 May 2028, and 29 Jan 2029.
IBM Call for Code
Annual global challenge mobilizing developers to build AI solutions to urgent global issues (climate, public health, justice/human rights), run with UN Human Rights and The Linux Foundation. Winning solutions are recognized at the United Nations and supported through deployment in communities worldwide.
Google Chrome
A Google Chrome-run fund, fiscally hosted by Open Source Collective, that backs web framework and build-tool projects working on performance: reducing initial bundle size, progressive resource delivery, meta-framework improvements (e.g. Next.js, Nuxt), breaking up JavaScript tasks, and underlying build tools (webpack, parcel). The 2022 cohort is historical. Open Collective now says submissions are in review, not that a new open intake is available.

Internet Society
The Internet Society Foundation's Common Good Cyber Fund supports nonprofits that maintain public-interest cybersecurity infrastructure and protect vulnerable or high-risk communities. The 2026 call will award at least $3.5 million through two-year operating grants.
FreeBSD Foundation
The FreeBSD Foundation accepts rolling grant requests to improve the FreeBSD Project, including equipment for developers, conference and event sponsorship, and other efforts benefiting the FreeBSD community.
ECMWF
Copernicus Grants, administered through ECMWF, includes calls such as the C3S National Collaboration Programme, with proposals submitted via ECMWF's Call Package and submission portal.
Apereo Foundation
Apereo Foundation's Dolphin Awards and Fellowships recognize and fund teaching-and-learning work built on open source education software, including a Dolphin Fellows track.
eBPF Foundation
The eBPF Foundation's Academic Research Grant Program funds academic research benefiting the eBPF community. It awarded five $50,000 grants in 2024, and its 2026 cycle accepted applications from June 15 through July 15 for awards up to $50,000; submissions are now under review.
ECMWF
ECMWF Grants, adopted in 2025, is a funding instrument providing financial support to organizations whose activities contribute to ECMWF's objectives.
ElevenLabs
A recurring internal-nomination fund supporting open-source projects that ElevenLabs engineers use in their work. Every six months, engineers nominate projects and the company distributes direct monthly support across maintainers and projects in audio, web infrastructure, testing, rendering, developer tooling, and language ecosystems.
Ethereum Foundation
The Ethereum Foundation's primary direct grants program, supporting free and open-source projects, builder tools, infrastructure, and research that strengthen Ethereum's technical, social, and research foundations. After pausing unsolicited open grants in August 2025, ESP relaunched in November 2025 as a Wishlist and Requests-for-Proposals program. Applicants apply against posted items; time-limited open rounds are a separate, currently empty track. Quarterly allocation reports break awards into community and education, cryptography and zero-knowledge proofs, developer tooling, consensus and execution layers, and application infrastructure.
