Alfred P. Sloan Foundation — Technology Program
The Sloan Foundation's Digital Technology program funds the tools, norms, and institutions that sustain open-source software, hardware, and models in research. Its Open Source in Science line funds university Open Source Program Office (OSPO) grants (up to $750,000 over two years), publication/archiving infrastructure, and research-software career paths; prospective applicants submit a two-page letter of inquiry. Recorded sub-lines include "Better Software for Science" (13 grants) and "Exploratory Grantmaking in Technology" (8 grants).
Amateur Radio Digital Communications
ARDC (Amateur Radio Digital Communications) funds projects that advance amateur radio, digital communications, and related technologies through an open grants application process, with awards announced annually.
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Awards AWS Promotional Credit to researchers building cloud-hosted tools, running proof-of-concept tests, or training communities on cloud research workloads. Open to full-time faculty and enrolled graduate or PhD students at accredited research institutions; applications are reviewed on a rolling 90-120 day cycle, with student awards capped at $5,000 and faculty/staff awards uncapped.
Google Chrome
A Google Chrome-run fund, fiscally hosted by Open Source Collective, that backs web framework and build-tool projects working on performance: reducing initial bundle size, progressive resource delivery, meta-framework improvements (e.g. Next.js, Nuxt), breaking up JavaScript tasks, and underlying build tools (webpack, parcel). The 2022 cohort is historical. Open Collective now says submissions are in review, not that a new open intake is available.

FreeBSD Foundation
The FreeBSD Foundation accepts rolling grant requests to improve the FreeBSD Project, including equipment for developers, conference and event sponsorship, and other efforts benefiting the FreeBSD community.

ElevenLabs
A recurring internal-nomination fund supporting open-source projects that ElevenLabs engineers use in their work. Every six months, engineers nominate projects and the company distributes direct monthly support across maintainers and projects in audio, web infrastructure, testing, rendering, developer tooling, and language ecosystems.
Ethereum Foundation
The Ethereum Foundation's primary direct grants program, supporting free and open-source projects, builder tools, infrastructure, and research that strengthen Ethereum's technical, social, and research foundations. After pausing unsolicited open grants in August 2025, ESP relaunched in November 2025 as a Wishlist and Requests-for-Proposals program. Applicants apply against posted items; time-limited open rounds are a separate, currently empty track. Quarterly allocation reports break awards into community and education, cryptography and zero-knowledge proofs, developer tooling, consensus and execution layers, and application infrastructure.
FLOSS/fund
FLOSS/fund provides roughly $1M per year to free and open source projects; applicants create a funding.json manifest in their repo and apply through its public directory.
FOSS United
FOSS United Foundation runs a grants program (a 25-lakh INR budget as of 2025) for FOSS projects and developers in India, covering both event grants and project grants via an online application.
GitHub
A GitHub program investing in the security of critical open source projects: each accepted project receives $10,000 ($6,000 during the program, $2,000 at the 6-month check-in, $2,000 at the 12-month check-in) paired with a 3-week security education program and expert support. Open to current maintainers (individual or teams of up to 3) of projects with a valid open source license, community adoption, and established governance; applications are rolling and considered for upcoming sessions.
Free and Open Source Software Sustainability Fund
The Open Technology Fund's flagship fund for internet freedom worldwide — censorship circumvention, privacy and secure communications, digital-security capacity building, and applied research. Concept notes are accepted on a rolling basis; most requests fall between $50,000 and $200,000 (range $10,000-$900,000), open to individuals and organizations of any nationality except those under OFAC sanctions, with priority for those working in repressive environments.
Linux Foundation
Recurring Linux Foundation mentorship connecting new contributors with project maintainers on a defined deliverable. Full-time terms run spring (March–May), summer (June–August), and fall (September–November); mentees apply on the LFX platform to at most three projects per term. Participating projects may offer educational stipends on a purchasing-power-parity schedule; terms starting July 1, 2026 use a $1,000 minimum and $6,600 maximum.
